Swimming Pool Chemicals and Water Quality in Dubai: A Homeowner’s Essential Guide

Water chemistry in swimming pools sounds more difficult than it actually is. Once you get the basic concepts, it’s straightforward to keep your pool’s water clean. But pool repair company in dubai is a very harsh environment, and there is less room for error than in countries with milder weather. A pool that is perfectly balanced on a cool October afternoon can be very out of balance during a July heatwave. If you ignore the signs, you could be left with an unhealthy green pool that is going to cost you a lot of time and money to fix.

In this article, we will discuss the main components of pool water chemistry, what can go wrong when they are not balanced, and how swimming pool maintenance companies in Dubai, like Green Creation, keep pools in perfect condition all year round.

THE CORE WATER CHEMISTRY PARAMETERS

Free chlorine is the traditional method for sanitizing and disinfecting a pool. Free chlorine kills germs, viruses, and algae and breaks down sunscreen, sweat, and pee that people leave behind in the water. The best range of free chlorine for a home pool is 1.0 to 3.0 parts per million (ppm). If the ppm level is less than 1.0, the pool is not properly cleaned, and algae can grow rapidly. Water above 3.0 ppm can burn your eyes and skin. Dubai has high UV levels and is hot, so chlorine breaks down faster than in cooler areas. This means you need to dose more frequently to keep levels good, especially in the summertime.

pH: The pH of the pool water can impact how well chlorine kills germs and how comfortable the water is to swim in. Use numbers 7.2 to 7.6. Water below this range is acidic and can damage pool surfaces and equipment and cause your eyes and skin to itch. If the water is higher than this range, it is alkaline and makes chlorine much less effective. Chlorine is approximately 30% less effective at pH 7.8 than it is at pH 7.4. So the pH is the most important thing to keep in the right range for all the other factors in the pool’s water chemistry.

Alkalinity as a whole: This indicator measures the resistance of the pool water to pH changes or its ability to handle sudden pH changes. You should be aiming for between 80 and 120 ppm. If alkalinity is low, the pH is unstable, and it varies rapidly with the addition of chemicals or when people swim or play in it. High alkalinity makes it difficult to change the pH and may also contribute to scale growth.

Calcium Hardness: This measurement is the amount of calcium dissolved in the water. For concrete pools, the ideal range is between 200 and 400 ppm. If the water is too soft (low in calcium), it is rough and will try to take calcium from the pool shell, which can damage the surface. Hard water (high calcium) leaves scale on surfaces, tiles, and tools.

Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid): This chemical stops chlorine from breaking down when it’s exposed to UV light. If you have an outdoor pool in Dubai that gets a lot of sun, you need a stabilizer. You aim for 30 to 50 parts per million. Without a stabilizer, UV light can destroy chlorine in a matter of hours. But too much stabilizer reduces the effectiveness of chlorine. This phenomenon is called chlorine lock.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): This value is a measure of the concentration of all of the things dissolved in the water. The TDS level will increase as the pool is used, water evaporates, and chemicals are added. When the water level gets above a certain level, usually 1500 ppm over the TDS of the fill water, the quality drops off significantly, and some of it needs replacing.

HOW DUBAI’S CLIMATE AFFECTS WATER CHEMISTRY

Dubai’s climate creates unique challenges for managing pool water that you don’t see in the same way in cooler climates. High air temperature also greatly increases the evaporation rate. As water evaporates, it carries pure water molecules away, leaving the dissolved chemicals behind in a more concentrated solution. This means that calcium hardness, TDS, and the level of stabilizer all creep up over time. You will need to top up with fresh water regularly. This will dilute the chemicals, and you will need to adjust the doses. Strong UV light degrades chlorine fast. A pool low in stabilizer in the summer sun of Dubai can lose most of its free chlorine in a matter of hours. In the summer, daily dosing is vital, even with a stabilizer at the right level. In summer without a chiller, pool water can reach 38°C or higher. High water temperatures accelerate the growth of bacteria and algae and place greater demand on the sanitizer. At the same time, some chemical reactions are less stable at high temperatures, making it harder to keep water in balance. Sandstorms add organic material and fine particulates to the water that create a chlorine demand and add to the load on the filtration system.

THE GREEN CREATION MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

The Green Creation program for pool repair is designed to meet the needs of Dubai’s climate. In the summer, the company’s technicians check residential pools twice a week, and in the cooler months they check all of the water’s vital chemistry parameters once a week with professional-grade digital test tools. Chemical changes are not made on guesses but on exact data. Green Creation keeps meticulous records of all test results and chemical additions. This gives customers a full picture of the water quality history of their pool and helps the maintenance team identify trends before they become problems. Physical cleaning such as brushing, vacuuming, and skimming is always carried out. At certain times filters are changed and tools checked. As soon as there is a problem with the equipment, the client is informed about it, a solution suggestion, and a time frame.

WHY PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE BEATS DIY

Many pool owners get mixed results when they try to manage their water chemistry. The problem is that pool water behaves like a system. Different parts work together, and changing one can have an effect on other parts. In your pool you have to know how the system works to do the right things. The equipment needs to be tested. Dubai maintenance companies have a lot of experience monitoring the chemistry of many pools in a variety of settings. They know how Dubai’s pools behave as summer rolls around. They know what can go wrong and how to prevent it. And they have the chemicals and dose tools they need to make changes quickly and correctly.

Green Creation’s management team applies this professional knowledge to each and every pool we manage. This way, clients can enjoy crystal clear, perfectly balanced water all year round without worrying about doing it themselves.

Pool water chemistry in Dubai always requires careful treatment by professionals. Repair companies for swimming pools in Dubai that take this job seriously make a huge difference in how well a pool works and how long it lasts.
